Barbershop Singing Group lose founding member to retirement after 44 years.

The Sam Smith Singers group was founded 44 years ago as a Barbershop Quartet by Dan Earp, David Buchannan, Jo Lincoln, and Richard Newton. The group name was inspired by their fondness for a specific beer brand needed to soothe their throats. Although the brands may vary, the tradition continues to be regarded as vital “training fluid” today. With theinclusion of new members, it now operates as a Barbershop Chorus. Dan is the Musical Director, and Jo continues to be active within the group. Unfortunately, David passed away a few years ago, and sadly Richard has now decided to retire from the group.

For Richard, music has played a significant role throughout his life. He recounts an event involving his father a highly respected violin maker, who crafted a violin for the world renown violinist Yehudi Menuhin.  He clearly inherited his father’s skills, becoming a talented joiner and cabinet maker. He also taught himself to play the piano and entertained many over the years, with his improvised renditions of popular songs.

As a raconteur of Norfolk Squit, Richard has told many a shaggy dog story, to much amusement between songs during our barbershop concerts. We are so grateful for his contributions in getting the group to this point, and his talent and cheerful nature will be greatly missed. As a raconteur of Norfolk Squit, Richard has told many a shaggy dog story, to much amusement between songs during our barbershop concerts. The Sam Smith Singers sing in a somewhat unorthodox barbershop style covering a wide range of songs. Some traditional barbershop songs are included, but it’s mainly popular and rock classics featuring works from Elvis, Nat King Cole, Everly Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, The Temptations, Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones, The Clash, Scaffold, Queen, The Proclaimers, and Michael Jackson. Our objective is to deliver an engaging and enjoyable programme that ensures excellent value for money. We emphasize cultivating a friendly, sociable, and proficient group through a process that is both fun and rewarding.

We are always on the lookout for new members to join in the fun so if you can hold a tune, you would be most welcome.  We rehearse in Thornage, Nr Holt every Monday between 7pm and 9pm. You do not need any formal music knowledge or experience, as all learning materials are provided, and you will be given every assistance in developing a great sound with us. So, make contact and be part of our ongoing journey, we’re sure you’ll enjoy it.
