The Sam Smith Singers were established around 45 years ago by Dan Earp, who remains the musical director. The group's name is derived from the well-known beer of the same name, which was a preferred choice for easing their vocal chords. Although there is now a variety of beverages, this tradition continues. The group reformed after the pandemic lockdown at the end of 2022. With membership increasing and an expanding repertoire, the future looks promising - they have even acquired new waistcoats.
The group values enjoyment and consists of local men who take pleasure in singing in a Barbershop Chorus. Based in Thornage, they meet for rehearsals from 7 to 9 pm on Mondays. They are a friendly and supportive mixed-ability group that works in a relaxed atmosphere but with a serious intent to produce quality sound and performance.
The group seeks to increase its membership and welcomes individuals interested in singing as a hobby. Previous musical experience is not necessary, but a sense of rhythm, the ability to hold a tune, and a willingness to learn are beneficial. Barbershop involves four different lines singing close harmony together without backing instruments, covering a range of music from Traditional Songs to Modern Rock Classics. The group's Barbershop style includes barbershop harmonies with a modern twist.
